MADISON, Wis. — A major ramp closure from Interstate 39/90 to the Beltline is expected to bring significant backups in parts of southeast Madison on Tuesday, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

The ramp from southbound I-39/90 to the westbound Beltline will be closed from 2 a.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday. In addition, the southbound interstate will be reduced to two lanes between Interstate 94 and the Beltline, WisDOT said in a news release.

The agency is recommending drivers use U.S. Highway 51/Stoughton Road to get to the Beltline, either by exiting north of Madison or using Highway 151/East Washington Avenue or State Highway 30 to connect with Stoughton Road.

A signed detour will have drivers take I-39/90 south to County Highway N and turn around to get back to the Beltline.

The work comes as crews finish paving work near the I-39/90 and Beltline interchange as part of a larger project to expand the interstates to three lanes in each direction from the Wisconsin/Illinois state line to Madison. WisDOT said work is set to wrap up in mid-November.
