‘Put your resources together and something amazing will happen’: Black Earth strengthens after flood

BLACK EARTH, Wis. — After two historical flood events over the past two weeks, it’s safe to say we don’t need any more rain.

Some communities were submerged under several feet of water as the floods destroyed homes. Clean up efforts have been endless.

“We basically started last Wednesday night up to this point now and we’ve seen a lot of progress over the weekend,” said Josh Wahl, a Black Earth volunteer firefighter.

Wahl is just one of dozens over the past week who have helped make Black Earth look like there was never even a flood.

“Put your resources together and something amazing will happen,” he said.

Something amazing has been happening.

Wahl and other volunteers have been delivering food to locals who lost everything in the flood.

“We’re trying to be the happy, smiley face that everyone wants to see. And we’re just doing the best we can to lift the spirits in town,” Wahl said.

On Wednesday, Wahl and several community kids drove around in one of Black Earth’s fire trucks and went door to door offering sandwiches, chips and cookies to residents in Black Earth.

Many were thankful for the food, since the village food pantry was flooded.

Volunteers agreed that the town looks completely different than it did a week ago. They say it’s amazing to see what a community can do when banding together through a devastating situation.
