Prince to receive honorary degree from University of Minnesota
After years of rumors, the University of Minnesota will officially present Prince with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, the Star Tribune reported.
Prince graduated from Minneapolis Central High School but never attended college. The degree is considered the university’s highest honor. The Star Tribune reported it will be given to Prince “in recognition of his remarkable talent, enduring influence in music and his role in shaping the city of Minneapolis.”
Prince died from an accidental drug overdose at his Chanhassen estate on April 21, 2016. He was 57.
University President Eric Kaler and Regent Darrin Rosha will deliver the degree to Prince’s sister, Tyka Nelson. Students from the School of Music will perform a tribute to the singer. The ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 26.
