Postal carrier gets 1 year probation, fine for felony theft

48-year-old stole items from mail she was carrying

MADISON, Wis. — A former postal carrier in Marathon County was sentenced Wednesday to probation and must pay a fine after she pleaded guilty to felony theft. 

United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin John Vandreuil said Lisa Virginia A. Barker, 48, of Gleason, was sentenced to one year probation and must pay a $125 fine and $80 restitution for the felony conviction of theft of mail by a postal emplyoee. 

Barker pleaded guilty to the charge on Oct. 3.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Barker was a rural mail carrier in Schofield until May 2011. In late 2010 and early 2011, after customer complaints of missing mail, the Post Office Inspector General planted a Target gift card in the mail. Barker admitted she stole the gift card and used it to make purchases. 

Barker also said she opened mail stole items on five or six occasions.
