Police: Woman stole school iPads in Craigslist encounter
Kelsea K. Statz, 27, of Fitchburg

A 27-year-old woman was charged with burglary after police said she met a stranger at a McFarland home and stole electronics in early January.

McFarland police Lt. Brian Redman said a 39-year-old man was house-sitting for relative in McFarland on Jan. 4 when he arranged to meet a woman he didn’t know via Craigslist for a sexual encounter.

According to the report, Kelsea K. Statz arrived on the evening of Jan. 4 and left in the early morning hours.

After Statz left, several items and cash were discovered missing including two iPads belonging to the McFarland School District, police said. The missing items were valued at about $1,000.

Police said undercover McFarland officers made arrangements through Craigslist to meet Statz and took her into custody three days later, on Jan. 7.

Redman said anyone using sites like Craigslist to meet strangers should be aware that incidents like the burglary in this case are possible.

“(We want to) remind people who are (using) these sites for companionship that bad things can happen,” Redman said.

Statz has a preliminary hearing in Dane County court Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Online records indicate Statz is a Fitchburg resident.
