Police: Standoff with man accused of cutting brother with sword ends peacefully

WEST BEND, Wis. — A more than three-hour-long police standoff in West Bend ended peacefully when a 22-year-old man surrendered to police early Sunday morning, police said.

Officers were called to a home in the 1600 block of Hans Street at 1:43 a.m. after receiving a call from a 24-year-old man who said his brother had cut him with a sword and threatened him with a gun, the West Bend Police Department said in a post on its official Facebook page.

When officers arrived, the 24-year-old was outside and the 22-year-old was inside the home and refused to come out, the post said. The younger brother threatened to kill any officers that came into the home and sent photos of himself holding a gun, police said.

Police said they were eventually able to convince the man to surrender. He faces charges of recklessly endangering safety and failure to comply with officer’s attempt to take a person into custody.

The elder brother suffered a minor cut to his abdomen from the sword, police said. Several neighbors were evacuated from the area during the standoff.
