Madison police responded to reports of gunfire early Saturday morning on the 400 block of East Wilson Street, according to a report from the police Department.

According to the report, there were several gunshots after a disturbance in a nearby establishment. The gunfire hit several cars, including a camper-style van that a 56-year-old man was staying in.

The 56-year-old told police he pulled into the downtown parking lot, thinking it would be a quiet place to bunk down for the night. When he heard the gunshots, he figured it must be fireworks but looked out the window and saw several people running, police said.

The man’s van was hit three times by bullets, including one round that hit just inches below the man’s bed, according to a release.

No one was injured, but officers found 10 shells casings at the scene.
