Police look into report of child sexual assault on playground

A Madison police detective is looking into a report of a sexual assault of a child near an elementary school Monday to determine if anything inappropriate took place.

A child at a near east school reported she was sexually assaulted outside Monday, according to a police report.

Madison police said a 6-year-old girl told her mother that she was molested on the playground during school hours at Lapham Elementary school on East Dayton Street.

Officers spoke to the girl and her mother, who was able to provide possible physical evidence, police said.

Police said the assailant was described as male with a long black beard and mustache. He was wearing a red shirt and black pants, carrying binoculars and a bag across his shoulder.

Madison Metropolitan School District officials released a statement Tuesday.

“Yesterday evening we became aware of an alleged incident that involved one of our students. We are gathering additional details and will share what we can as we learn more. In the meantime, we wanted to be sure that families were notified because of the seriousness of the allegation. The safety of our students is a top priority and we will take any necessary precautions in collaboration with the Madison Police Department and our Central Office.”
