Police: Gun, pot found in reckless driver’s SUV

Police said a gun and pot were found in the abandoned vehicle of a reckless driver on Madison’s west side Sunday morning.

Madison police said a 39-year-old Madison woman was driving west on Mineral Point Road at 10:42 a.m. when she saw an SUV come racing up behind her vehicle. The SUV left the roadway and drove on the median before coming back to the traffic lane.

According to the report, the SUV lost control and slammed into a tree.

The vehicle sustained sever damage, police said. The driver, 23-year-old Phil R. Johnson Jr., of Madison, fled, but was found leaning against a tree in Everglade Park, police said.

Johnson suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment, police said.

A handgun and marijuana were recovered from the crashed SUV, according to the report.

Johnson was cited on suspicion of reckless driving, failure to notify police of accident and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
