Police arrest 3 after reports of shooting near UW campus

University of Wisconsin-Madison police said they don’t believe a campus neighborhood is in danger following a shooting incident Tuesday night.

They said three suspects are in custody in connection with reports of shots fired Tuesday night in the Eagle Heights/University Houses neighborhood, which is located north and west of UW Hospital on the far west end of campus.

Police said no one was injured.

The first call came in at 9:28 p.m. Tuesday and reported as many as five shots fired and a vehicle leaving the scene. UW-Madison police said shell casings were found at the scene.

Police said two suspects were taken into custody and a search was conducted for a third person, who was found at 11:29 p.m.

Police said the three suspects are not connected to UW, and police are still piecing together the incident.

“We don’t believe there was anybody in the university who’s specifically targeted. For some reason (the suspects) rendezvoused at this location and the disturbance involved a weapon and shots were fired,” said Sgt. Aaron Chapin, of the UW-Madison Police Department.

UW Hospital was put on lockdown for several hours Tuesday night. The lockdown ended about midnight.
