Police: 3 use fake debit cards to defraud bank

Three Illinois residents were arrested Tuesday on charges of attempting to fraudulently obtain $500 from a bank on Madison’s west side, officials said.

Dion J. Davis, 29, of Calumet Park, Rashad R. Bingham, 18, of Chicago, and Ursula M. Walker, 19, of Chicago, unsuccessfully attempted to defraud the BMO Harris Bank at 7801 Mineral Point Road Tuesday around 2 p.m., officials said.

The bank teller told police they immediately knew the Green Dot Gold Visa debit card being used was counterfeit, according to a release. The teller tried to stall Walker while police responded but she took off.

Bank staff provided descriptions of three people and a black 2008 Mercedes-Benz, police said. The vehicle was then spotted at the Wells Fargo Bank at 432 S. Gammon Rd. by an officer.

Eight bogus Green Dot cards, similar to the one Walker attempted to use at the BMO Harris Bank, were recovered from the vehicle, according to the release.

Investigators said while this attempt was unsuccessful, cash advances using similar fraudulent debit cards have recently been obtained following stops at other financial institutions.
