Phony $100 bills pass at two Madison bars

Two phony $100 bills passed successfully at two separate Madison bars Tuesday night.

The bills looked kind of real, but they were clearly marked with the information that they are for motion picture use only, according to a police report.

The first bill was presented at Busse’s Markway Tavern on Sherman Avenue around 11:40 p.m. Tuesday. The second was presented over an hour later at Echo Tap on Main Street, police said.

In both cases, a similarly described criminal bought one drink and pocketed the change. Also in both cases, the criminal left in a red or a maroon van, according to the report.

The suspect is described as a 25-year-old black male about 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 6 inches tall, with an average build and wearing a white, sleeveless, hooded sweatshirt, police said.
