Person sends apology note, money to make amends for 75-year-old crime

A public works department in Utah is praising an anonymous letter donor for “doing the right thing” after he or she sent an apology and $50 for a crime committed seven decades ago.

Midvale Mayor Robert Hale says the letter was postmarked from North Houston, Texas and does not include a return address, but he believes the crime in question happened in the 1940s.

“He paid more than $50 in 75 years if he’s been carrying the burden on his shoulder,” Hale said.

The anonymous person wrote that he or she took a stop sign from the community as a teenager and hoped the “stupid” decision to steal the sign would now be forgiven.

Hale says he hopes the person will reveal his or her identity in order to be recognized for making amends because “it is never too late to do the right thing.”
