Person of interest sought in overnight shooting that injured Madison woman

Police are looking for a person of interest in connection with a shooting on Madison’s east side overnight Wednesday .

The Madison Police Department said Thursday evening that 42-year-old Edward A. Matthews is being sought as police investigate an attempted homicide in which a woman was shot multiple times.

Officers responded to a report of a shots fired in the 200 block of Rethke Avenue at 11:29 p.m. Wednesday.

A 37-year-old woman was shot multiple times, according to the report. Neighbors heard the gunfire and came to the victim’s aid as she called out for help. She was in critical condition Thursday morning, according to the report. Doctors believe she will likely survive.

Police said Matthews is black, 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 165 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

Officers have probable caus to arrest Matthews on suspicion of felony bail jumping and resisting arrest, police said. Officers have checked addresses associated with him and haven’t found him.

Police asked anyone who sees Matthews or knows his whereabouts to call the department’s officer-in-charge at 608-266-4923 or 911.

Police said Matthews may be armed, and no one should attempt to contact him.
