A thief attempting to steal liquor from a west Madison store Saturday also punched a worker, police said.

Madison police said a man was at the Target on Junction Road at 8:39 p.m. with a shopping cart full of high-end liquor worth about $600.

As the man rolled the cart out of the store, a loss prevention officer approached him, the report said. The man began to push the worker, who then retreated back into the Target. But the thief chased him down and punched him in the head, knocking the 21-year-old to the floor. The shoplifter was loudly cursing, drawing lots of attention, as he loaded his the stolen alcohol into an older red, rusty Ford Taurus.

Police said the thief was described as black, between 50 to 60 years old, 250 pounds, about 5 feet 8 inches tall with a medium to heavy build. He had a dark complexion, gray beard, short gray hair and was wearing a brown jacket and blue jeans.
