Patricia L. “Pat” Skubis

BELLEVILLE/OREGON-Patricia L. “Pat” Skubis, age 77, of Belleville, passed away at her home with her beloved family surrounding her on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016.

She was born on March 27, 1938, in Stevens Point, the daughter of Harvey and Ethel (Madsen) Bergstrom. On Aug. 30, 1959, Pat graduated from the Fairview Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, Minn. After graduation, she moved to Tomah where she met Richard J. Skubis. Pat and Richard married on April 18, 1960, in Menomonie and then moved to Madison. In 1973 they built their home out in the country by Paoli.

Pat completed her B.S.N. at Milton College in 1979. During her nursing career, Pat worked at the V.A. Hospital in Tomah, UW-Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital and Madison General Hospital as a Psychiatric RN. The next 23 years of her career were spent in long term care at Skaalen Home in Stoughton and finally at Independent Living in Madison. She retired in 2000 and spent her time as a part-time teacher for Blackhawk Tech in Janesville and MATC in Madison where she taught CNAs, Medical Terminology, Hardanger Embroidery and Internet Genealogy.

Pat is a long-time family history researcher and genealogist. She taught genealogy classes in Oregon, Fitchburg, Waunakee and surrounding communities. She was an active member of the Dane County Area Genealogical Society and the Madison Embroiders Guild. Pat loved to travel and was able to visit 42 of the 48 states. She took many trips around the state with her kids, likely to every historical site. She has also visited Canada, Mexico and the Bahamas with her friends and husband. She and Kassia traveled to Luxembourg, Germany and Denmark together in 1987. Pat and Kris took many adventures throughout the U.S. and Europe; including, in 2003 to Poland and Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. In 2013, she also traveled with her daughter, Kris and niece, Kathy to Denmark to meet many of her Danish cousins.

Pat is survived by her daughters, Kristi Skubis and Kassia (Tim) Millar; grandchildren, Jacob, Trinity, Andrew and Sadie; step-sister, Lois (Bob) Ryman; and other relatives and friends. Pat was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1991; step-father, Ove Rasmusen; sister, Beverly (Lloyd) Norton; and step-brother, Ken Rasmusen.

A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at GUNDERSON OREGON FUNERAL HOME, 1150 Park St., Oregon, at 11 a.m., on Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, with Chaplain Stephen Zwetler presiding. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., and again from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. Burial will be held at the Forest Cemetery, Stevens Point on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
