Passers-by rescue infant, mother, teen from pickup in river

Authorities said passers-by rescued a 19-year-old woman, her infant son and a teenager after a pickup landed upside-down in an icy river in western Wisconsin last week.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said Monday the three were all hospitalized after the Wednesday afternoon accident but escaped serious injury.

The Star Tribune reported that Nycole Stream of Amery was driving north on a county road in the town of Apple River when the pickup slid down an embankment and into the iced-over Apple River.

According to the sheriff’s office, passers-by entered the frigid water and rescued the driver and a 16-year-old passenger. The rescuers then found the baby and removed him from the pickup. He was initially unresponsive but was soon revived by the rescuers.
