Outdoor UW summer rentals now available

MADISON – If you’re looking to spend more time outside this summer, but don’t have a closet full of gear, you’re in luck. Outdoor UW has begun its 2022 season for paddling rentals and summer group experiences.

Tandem kayaks, single kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards, and even an eight-person stand-up paddleboard are just a few of the things you can rent this summer. If you’d like to get outside with friends, you can even organize your own experience.

“We also have a group experience program so if you’re in town with a conference or you have an interest group that you work with, we can do organized group experiences, said Dave Elsmo, the director of Outdoor UW. “We can take you out on the paddleboards or canoes and kayaks and take you around the lake, learn a little bit about it, or we can help you make it what you want as far as an educational experience.”

If you don’t have any experience and are a little hesitant, Elsmo said there’s no need to worry.

“If you’re going out on the water here, we do a little bit of an educational and safety briefing before you go out on the water,” Elsmo said. “We also have UW Lake Safety that’s kind of like our safety nets. So we always have someone to help when and if things don’t go exactly as planned.”

Outdoor UW is also hosting its Family Nights on Lake Mendota series every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. All ages and skill levels can attend to go paddling, sightseeing, and play games every week until Aug. 30.

You can rent gear at Memorial Union’s service desk or make advance reservations online, by phone, or by email. For more information on group experiences, click or tap here.
