One person injured in fire at east side duplex

One person was injured after a fire broke out early Friday morning at an east side duplex, according to the Madison fire department.

Firefighters saw flames visible from the side window when they arrived on the scene just after 1:30 a.m. Friday. A ladder unit quickly extinguished the fire, which is believed to have started in an upstairs bathroom, according to the fire department.

A smoke alarm woke up the residents inside, who managed to get out of the building before firefighters arrived. One of the residents was assessed for smoke inhalation and was taken to UW Hospital. The fire department said his condition was note believed to be life threatening.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire officials estimate the damage is between $10,000 and $15,000.
