One-of-a-kind gifts and home decor at Vault on Atwood Avenue

By Shayna Mace
If you’ve been on the hunt for that perfect finishing piece or accent for your home, it won’t be hard to find at Vault Interiors and Design. Although the name may hint at locked-away loot, the treasures at owner Carrie Simpson’s shop are easily accessible.
“I thought there was still a niche to be filled,” explains Simpson. “It was frustrating to hear people saying they needed to go to Chicago for what they were looking for.”
Simpson, a former employee at the also wonderful home boutique Fontaine, says her location is what sealed the deal to open her store sooner rather than later last September.
“This neighborhood is sort of the place to be now for young adults and not-so-young adults. We’re the grown-up side of the Square,” jokes Simpson. Plus, she likes that Vault is the anchor of Atwood—”a beacon, or the head of the street.”
The shop is a refreshing mix of vintage, industrial and modern aesthetics, boasting such pieces as colorful yarn-covered animals, funky throw pillows, sparkling decanters and luxe furnishings. Whimsical pieces dot the store throughout, like faux taxidermied fish in sleek silver and cheeky decorative trays (like one printed with a parking ticket).
“We relate to Madisonians,” says Simpson. “We get a lot of people that sit down and stay a while. That’s the kind of store I wanted to create.”
