Officer shot 12 times at Sikh temple retires

Lt. Murphy may teach after leaving force in June, he says

The first officer to respond to the fatal rampage at the Sikh temple in Wisconsin last year said he is retiring from the police force.

Oak Creek Lt. Brian Murphy was shot 12 times by the lone gunman as the attacker left the temple. The gunman later fatally shot himself after being wounded by another officer.

Murphy told WISN-TV that he submitted his resignation Wednesday morning and would retire June 12. He said he’s not sure what he will do in retirement but he’s considering teaching.

President Barack Obama singled out Murphy for recognition on Saturday during a White House ceremony honoring police. Seven other officers who responded to the Sikh temple shootings also were honored.
