Oakland’s Davis hits HR in jersey inked by Make-A-Wish kid

Oakland Athletics slugger Khris Davis swapped autographs with a young fan from the Make-A-Wish Foundation and then proceeded to belt a home run while bearing the 10-year-old’s signature on his shoulder.

Davis’ 37th homer of the season led off the third inning of Oakland’s 9-0 home win over the Texas Rangers on Monday night. The solo home run to left-center was estimated to have traveled 438 feet.

He met Oakland sixth-grader Anthony Slocumb before the game and asked him to sign his jersey after the young fan asked for his autograph.

Slocumb is in remission from a rare cancer called Langerhans cell histiocytosis, according to The Associated Press. He was visiting the Oakland Coliseum with a group from the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s Greater Bay Area chapter.

“I thought about him around the bases. There’s not a better feeling than hitting a home run, so hopefully he got some excitement and joy from watching that,” Davis said after the game, according to the AP. “They’re really the stars. … He was excited. I could tell that he was just happy to be here and wanted to have some fun. It was amazing, the look on his face.”

Davis, who also had a single in the eighth inning to go 2-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout, is aiming for his third straight 40-homer season after hitting 42 in 2016 and a career-best 43 in 2017.
