Madison- Norma D. Briggs, age 86, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2013, at Oakwood Village Assisted Living. She was born in Madison on September 9, 1926, the daughter of Raymond and Olga (Klongland) Tjugum.

As a lifelong resident of the East Side, Norma was active with Habitat for Humanity, Northside Coalition, Meals on Wheels, Sherman Middle School and St. Paul Lutheran Church. She worked for the State of Wisconsin and retired after 31 years. She loved gardening, camping, playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her four children, Kathy Guess, of Madison, Karen Grant, of Edgerton, Marilyn Briggs-Jackson, of Basye, Va., and Gerald (Kim) Briggs, of Cottage Grove; three sisters, Ephame (Doug) Dehn, of Minnetonka, Minn., Donna (Bill) Miller, of Madison, and Sharon (Johan) Swildens, of Poway, Calif.; a brother, Kenneth (Joan) Tjugum, of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Jeannine Tjugum; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Roland Tjugum; a sister, LaVon Martinson; and a grandson, Dan Root.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, 2013, at TREE OF LIFE CHAPEL- OAKWOOD VILLAGE PRAIRIE RIDGE, 5565 Tancho Drive, with the Rev. Gerry Kuhnke presiding. A visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Sunday. There will be a time for fellowship following the service.
