New UW-Madison chancellor meets with students, staff on first day on campus
MADISON, Wis. — New University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin met with students and staff members Thursday during an ice cream social to mark her first day on campus.
Mnookin, who was named the university’s next leader in May, spent her first day on campus touring Engineering Hall, meeting with faculty members and serving ice cream on Bascom Hill.
Those who stopped by the event were able to choose from a number of Babcock ice cream flavors, as well as enjoy games and listen to the Badger Band.

Babcock has named ice cream flavors after prominent people on campus in the past, including Barry Alvarez and former Chancellor Rebecca Blank. When asked what a Mnookin ice cream flavor would be, the new chancellor said she may have to crowdsource some ideas.
“Honestly, I’ve gotten some cute ideas so far,” she said. “Just today, I got somebody saying to me Mnookie Dough, somebody playing with ginger chancellor and somebody playing with Blue Mnookin,” she said.

Asked what she’s looking forward to doing in her first weeks and months on campus, Mnookin said plans to do a lot of listening to and learning from the campus community to help shape the university’s future as it approaches its 175th anniversary.
Mnookin takes over for Blank, who left UW-Madison to become the president of Northwestern University. Before assuming her new role, however, Blank announced she had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer that would keep her from taking the job.
