New hurricane makes run toward Hawaii

Hurricane Lane is expected to make a run at Hawaii next week, with an outcome similar to Hurricane Hector last week, The Weather Channel reported.

Lane became the sixth hurricane of the eastern Pacific season Thursday night. That is about three weeks ahead of the average seasonal pace.

As of Friday morning, Lane is about 1,600 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, moving west-northwest. Lane is expected to strengthen rapidly in the next two days, but it’s uncertain whether it will directly affect the islands next week.

The National Hurricane Center forecast shows Lane passing south of the islands, much the same path as Hurricane Hector took last week. Hector passed about 200 miles south of Hilo, Hawaii, on Aug. 8, which kept its tropical storm-force and hurricane-force winds away from the Big Island.

The Center advises residents in the Hawaiian Islands to be prepared in case the storm changes paths.
