Police said two mothers came to Beloit High School to complain that their daughters had been jumped Wednesday night by a group of girls from the high school on the 500 block of Locust Street.

The mothers got into the school and words were exchanged with students, prompting the fight, police said. Nine officers responded to the report of a disturbance at the school at 11:30 a.m.

Police said one of the moms tried to get her daughter out of the fight, but ended up getting involved instead.

District officials said they are thankful for a quick response from police.

“This is a bit shocking. We are not used to having this kind of activity come into the schools,” said Melissa Badger, with Beloit Public Schools. “In fact, this was an incident that started out in the community. It started at the home, an altercation happened, and then a parent decided to bring it on our campus.”

Police said the five people — one mother, another adult and three students — were cited and released by Thursday afternoon. One student was also cited for resisting arrest.
