MPD warns of phone scammer demanding ransom for child’s return

MADISON, Wis. — Madison police are warning of a new phone scam in which the caller claims to have the victim’s child and demands ransom money.
A Madison banker got a call last week on his personal phone while at work, according to a release. When the banker answered his phone, he could hear a girl crying and saying something.
A man got on the phone call, addressed the banker by his first name, and said he had the banker’s daughter, police said. The caller told the banker that ransom money would be required to get his daughter back.
The banker told the caller he does not have a daughter and hung up, according to the release.
Officials said the call appears to have originated in India.
