MPD: Armed suspect ends standoff, currently in police custody

MADISON, Wis. — An armed man involved in a standoff with the Madison Police Department and tactical SWAT team, has turned himself in.
The standoff was taking place along the 4000 block of Monona Drive, which is on the city’s far east side.

Officers were called to a house around 1:30 a.m. Thursday. A woman ran away from her home after her roommate, a 52-year-old man, produced a gun and fired out the back porch.
The woman was able to get to a nearby shopping plaza to call 911. She is in her 70s and the owner of the home where the standoff took place. She told police her roommate was armed with a long gun, which police believed to be a shotgun. She also said her roommate had been drinking.
Police said the first shot did not appear to cause any injuries or damage.

Officers established a perimeter around the home and evacuated those nearby, according to Madison Police Chief Mike Koval.
Police also believe a second shot was fired around 5:30 a.m. Thursday, according to Koval.
He said police are familiar with the suspect. The man has a criminal history and has experienced mental health difficulties.

Officers were also called to the home sometime on Wednesday. Koval was not able to explain what prompted that call, as he provided an update on the standoff around 7 a.m. Thursday.
Monona Drive between Cottage Grove Road and Buckeye Road is closed. Drivers are asked to avoid this area.
