Mounds warehouse raises $22,500 to protect K-9 officers

MADISON, Wis. — Mounds Pet Food Warehouse made a big donation to help keep local K-9 units safe in the line of duty.
During the month of July, the company raised $22,500 for Vest-a-Dog, a local organization that provides bullet-proof and stab-proof vests for police dogs in Wisconsin.
According to a press release, many police departments can’t afford to purchase body armor for their K-9 units. Each vest costs between $850 to $1,200.
Every July, Mounds donates 50 cents per 35-pound bag of Mounds Dog Power. This year, Mounds decided to also sell Vest-a-Dog plush toys and accept donations at the register.
Vest-a-Dog hoped to raise enough money to outfit police K-9 units Drea and Ritter, but Mounds far exceeded that goal.
The extra money will allow Vest-a-Dog to also donate a heat sensor system to the Fitchburg Police Department and provide K-9 first-aid kits to units across the state.
The $22,500 check will be presented Sept. 13 at 3 p.m. at Mounds in Sun Prairie.
