Mopeds no longer allowed to park on terraces, sidewalks under new ordinance

Mopeds will no longer be allowed to park on terraces and sidewalks starting on the first of the year, according to a new city ordinance.

The Madison City Council approved the ordinance on Aug. 1, but the changes won’t take effect until Jan. 1, according to a release.

The ordinance is intended to improve pedestrian safety by keeping city sidewalks and terraces clear of visual obstructions and reducing conflicts between mopeds and pedestrians, officials said.

The ordinance also establishes a process in which property owners can apply to establish moped parking areas on the terrace in front of their property, according to the release. Moped parking areas will be listed on the city of Madison’s website as they are established.

Mopeds may park at any legal on-street parking space, and up to three mopeds or motorcycles may park in one standard car space, officials said.

There are also on-street metered parking spaces designated specifically for motorcycles and mopeds, according to the release. City parking garages also have off-street parking spaces designated for mopeds and motorcycles.

Madison parking enforcement officers will be putting notices on mopeds over the next months with information about the ordinance change, permit options and locations of moped and motorcycle parking.
