Melvin H. Ingersoll

Melvin H. Ingersoll, 94, of Platteville, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2016 at Manor Care, Platteville.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2016 at the Platteville United Methodist Church. Rev. Brenda Whitford will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Grant County Hospice or the Platteville United Methodist Church.

Melvin was born on September 16, 1921 in Elk Grove Township, Lafayette County, WI, the son of John Wesley and Katie (Miller) Ingersoll. Melvin was a graduate of Belmont High School. On May 12, 1946, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Helen Heins, at the Lutheran Church of Peace in Platteville.
Melvin served in the United States Navy during World War II. After serving his country, Melvin and his brother, Gordon, operated and owned Ingersoll – J.I. Case Implement Business in Belmont, WI. After the untimely death of his brother, Melvin sold the implement business and went to work at John Deere in Dubuque, Iowa, where he worked for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1982. He was an avid reader, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and vacationing with his family in Florida. Melvin was a person who always enjoyed visiting with people and would make new friends wherever he traveled. He will be remembered for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor.
Melvin was a member of the United Methodist Church in Platteville. He was an honorary member of the Leo M. Kane American Legion Post #42 in Platteville and the UAW Local #94 in Dubuque, Iowa. He was also a member of Melody Masonic Lodge #2, Madison Zor Shrine, Washington Chapter York Rite #2, Platteville Comandry #35, Eastern Star, Miriam Chapter #15, and Southwestern Shrine Club in Platteville.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 69 years, Helen; three children, Linda (Roger) Boettcher of Madison; Karen (Tom) Heiser and Kelly (Jill) Ingersoll, both of Platteville; five grandchildren, Leslie (David Toy) Boettcher of Madison; Lindsay (David Barger) Heiser of Middleton; Lauren (Jim Ertel) Heiser-Ertel of Sun Prairie; Dr. Jenna Ingersoll of Boise, Idaho; and Brandon (Theresa) Ingersoll of Platteville; one great-grandchild, Leanna Boettcher-Toy; and many nieces and nephews. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; Lenore Moody, Lucille Ingersoll, and Ruth Miller; six brothers, Loren, Elton, Delbert, Gordon, Warren, and Robert.
