Medford student wins scholarship with 35-pound cabbage

MADISON, Wis. — A Medford student is the state winner of the Bonnie Plants Third Grade Cabbage Program, with her 35-pound cabbage, according to the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
Sydney Sperl, a student at Medford Area Elementary School, competed against 14,510 students from 730 schools.
The students received free oversized cabbage plants last spring from Bonnie Plants, according to a release. At the end of the growing season, teachers submitted a class winner and Sperl was randomly selected as the state winner.
She will receive a $1,000 scholarship from Bonnie Plants.
Wisconsin is one of the country’s largest producers of vegetables, DATCP officials said. There were 6,000 acres of cabbage harvested in Wisconsin in 2016 with a total value of $47.6 million.
