Mavis “Peggy” Link
MADISON-Mavis “Peggy” Joan Link, age 96, of Madison, died on Monday, June 25, 2012, at Heritage Memory Care in Monona, brought on by a brief illness following hip surgery. Peggy was born on May 12, 1916, in Nuneaton, England to Bert and Amy (Lomas) Lloyd.
She and her parents immigrated to the United States in 1923 and settled in Madison. Peggy attended Randall Elementary School and graduated from West High School. She married Alfred M. Link in 1935, and they spent 54 happy years together until his death in 1990. Peggy worked in the home while raising their five children. Later, she devoted herself to her “job” as a volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, accumulating over 10,000 hours of dedicated service well into her eighties. After her husband’s retirement, Peggy and Al enjoyed many trips overseas and throughout the United States, including numerous visits to their extended family. She was a voracious reader of murder mysteries and was quick to share the books with others when she finished them. Peggy was a longtime member of St. Raphael’s Cathedral in Madison for more than 70 years.
She is survived by five children, Pat (Bruce) Pickering of Littleton, Colo., Nancy (James) Engelhart of Madison, Richard (Pat) Link of Madison, Mary (Anthony) Cardarella of Monona, and Thomas Link of LaCrosse; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Amy Lloyd; her husband, Alfred; and great-grandson, Brandon Nichols of Littleton, Colo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2012. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s and Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin, 517 Segoe Rd., Suite 301, Madison, WI. 53705.
he family particularly wants to thank the staff at Heritage Memory Care in Monona for their loving care during her residency. Peggy’s sharp wit, her teasing sense of humor, her feistiness and her fondness for her beloved family will be greatly missed by all who have come to know and love her.
