Man who killed officers in ’75 to be released

A man who killed two Summit police officers nearly 40 years ago will be released from a mental health institution.

A six-person jury in Waukesha decided Thursday that Alan Randall may safely be released from Mendota Mental Health Institute.

The 54-year-old will remain there until a July 8 hearing. That’s when the state Department of Health Services will present a plan to the judge for approval.

Randall was 16 when he killed Robert “Rocky” Atkins and Wayne Olson in 1975. He was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, and committed to a state mental hospital.

He had tried numerous times over the years to win his release.

Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the victims’ families are upset he’ll be released.
