Man who hid stolen gun near Janesville school identified

Incident unrelated to Jakubowski investigation

Janesville police have identified the man they believe hid a stolen gun near a Janesville school on April 6 .

Robert R. Ambrose, 55, of Janesville, was arrested Thursday and faces a charge of a theft of a firearm after police say he stole two guns from a home he had been living in.

Police responded to a report of a suspicious person who had been seen picking up a long gun from the ground near Lincoln School and putting it into the trunk of a vehicle on April 6. The same day, officers responded to a home at 1305 W. Conde St. on a stolen property complaint.

Police said investigators discovered that Ambrose had hidden the stolen gun near the school and came back later to retrieve it.

He is being held at the Rock County Jail, police said.

The incident is unrelated to the Joseph Jakubowski investigation, police said.

NOTE: An earlier version of the story used a mugshot of a man not involved in this incident. A Rock County Jail official told News 3 at the time that the photo was of Ambrose; however, a subsequent email from the Janesville Police Department informed us that the photo was incorrect. We have updated this story with the correct photo of Ambrose from JPD. We regret the error.
