Man walks dozens of miles for Books for Africa
The founder of a Minnesota charity that has sent nearly 30 million books to schoolchildren in Africa is hiking dozens of miles to mark its 25th year.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported that Thomas Warth walked 48 miles from Menomonie, Wis., to Hudson, Wis., on Friday and Saturday to raise awareness for Books for Africa.
Warth founded the nonprofit group in 1988. This year, the group will give more than 3 million books to kids in Africa.
The trek wasn’t easy for the 77-year-old with a knee wrap. But he has hiked across Minnesota and Wisconsin on foot before, and has walked from the Canadian border to Iowa. He said he likes donating books because they can’t be corrupted — and even if a book is stolen, someone will read it.
