Man faces charges after striking numerous vehicles with his car, police say

A 25-year-old Madiso n man faces numerous felony and traffic violations after he struck numerous vehicles with his car late Sunday night, according to a news release from Madison police. 

Callers first reported the driver in the area of Lake Farm Road after he drove off the road, took out a traffic sign, went into a ditch and sped off. Police said he headed downtown, where his car left Langdon Street and went onto a sidewalk, narrowly missing pedestrians and a bicyclist.

Officers said they called off a pursuit after the driver, without headlights, blew through stop signs and red lights and headed out on East Johnson Street. Police said the driver was weaving in and out of traffic and hitting speeds as high as 80 mph.

Police tried unsuccessfully to stop the car near First Street using stop sticks.

The driver was stopped at a bar near Packers Avenue, where police found him causing a disturbance, according to a news release.

Ahmed M. Elgebaly, 25, of Madison, was arrested on suspicion of four counts of second-degree reckless endangerment, fleeing an officer, operating while intoxicated, reckless driving endangering safety, driving the wrong way on a divided highway, speeding, operating without a required lamp lighted, unsafe lane deviation and hit-and-run.
