Man crashes car while fleeing liquor store theft, police say

A Madison man was arrested Tuesday morning after stealing liquor and then crashing in the vehicle he fled the store from, Madison police said.

Nathaniel Pope, 33, stole liquor around 9:30 a.m. from Trixie’s Liquor Store and fled in a vehicle before police arrived, according to a release.

Pope made an illegal U-turn at the intersection of Highway 30 and North Stoughton Road, where he was hit by a vehicle that had the right-of-way, police said. Pope fled on foot, climbed a fence and was arrested by officers near Walmart.

Pope and the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash were evaluated for non-life-threatening injuries.
