Man arrested for stealing thousands of dollars worth steak, shrimp, alcohol, police say

The Madison Police Department arrested a man for a string of thefts involving taking shrimp, steaks and high-end alcohol from local retail stores, police said.

Thaddus D. McFadden, 54, was taken into custody Friday afternoon following a traffic stop on Alberg Avenue. The suspect laughed when the arresting officer mentioned McFadden had most likely been well-fed recently, police said.

McFadden is suspected to have stolen from five different retail stores. Among those hit include $1,300 worth of liquor taken at the HyVee on Whitney Way, $786 worth of liquor taken from the the HyVee on E. Washington Avenue, $472 worth of meat taken from the Woodman’s on Milwaukee Street, $500 worth of merchandise taken from Festival Foods on E. Washington Avenue and a $250 bottle of Dom Perignon from the Whole Foods on University Avenue, according to police.

In each instance hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise was taken, with the suspect using a suitcase to transport the goods out of the stores. The most recent theft listed was Sept. 2, the earliest theft was listed July 6, according to police.

McFadden has an extensive criminal history of committing similar crimes, including 17 past retail theft convictions or forfeitures in Wisconsin, according to police.
