Man accused of killing Lake Mills firefighter released on signature bond
MADISON, Wis. — The man accused of killing a Lake Mills Fire Department captain while driving drunk on New Year’s Eve was released on a signature bond Thursday.
Samuel Cremers, 28, of Columbus, was assigned a $5,000 signature bond, which he is responsible for paying if he misses any future court dates. His next court date is on March 7 for a bail/bond hearing.
He was arrested by Monona police on tentative charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle after crashing into Capt. Chris Truman on the Beltline at the Yahara River bridge.
Truman had stopped on the side of a road to help a woman who had lost control of her car while driving in the snow and later died of his injuries at the hospital.
Court records show no other drunken driving violations on Cremers’ record.
If charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and convicted, Cremers could face 25 years in prison.
