Mallards fall in Wisconsin Rapids

Offense records 5 hits in defeat

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. — The Madison Mallards (5-3, 23-18) fell to the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (3-3, 15-26) after being held to two runs on five hits Tuesday night in Wisconsin Rapids.

The Mallards scored their first run in the sixth inning after shortstop Trace Tam Sing doubled to drive in right fielder Connor Marabell, who had reached base on an error.

Tam Sing was one of two Mallards batters to record a hit against Rafters starter Domenic Mazza, who held the Mallards to one run in seven innings of work, walking three while striking out seven.

Catcher Matt Thaiss hit a solo home run in the ninth inning to bring the Mallards deficit to four runs.

Rafters reliever Nolan Blackwood closed out the Mallards after Thaiss’s home run, retiring three of the four batters.

The Rafters scored four of their six runs in the seventh and eighth innings, highlighted by a two run home run by third baseman Keelin Rasch in the seventh inning.

Mallards starter Tyler Buffett allowed two runs on eight hits and went 4.1 innings while striking out four Rafters.

The Mallards play in Wisconsin Rapids again Wednesday at 7:05 pm. They play two more at Witter Field before returning to the “Duck Pond” on July 11 to face the Rafters at 7:05 pm.
