Madison police investigating campus-area sexual assault

MADISON, Wis. — Madison police are investigating after a stranger reportedly sexually assaulted a woman just blocks away from the UW-Madison campus earlier this week.

Authorities said the 20-year-old victim was walking near the intersection of North Bassett and West Mifflin streets around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday when a man she didn’t know approached her from behind and inappropriately groped and touched her.

The woman told police she yelled loudly after the man touched her, which caused the suspect to run away. Police said several people in the area came outside to help the woman. She was able to return home and report the assault to police.

According to an incident report, the suspect was wearing a gray-and-black camouflage hooded sweatshirt and dark-colored pants at the time. He is described as a dark-skinned man somewhere between 5 feet, 8 inches and 6 feet tall.

Police said the investigation into the case is ongoing. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014.
