Madison mayor calls on Trump to continue young immigrants program

Mayor Paul Soglin is calling on the Trump administration to continue the DACA program.

DACA, or the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, protects eligible immigrant youths, who came to the U.S. as children from deportation.

The Trump administration is reviewing its options for the program.

On Tuesday, DACA recipients, also known as “Dreamers,” joined Soglin in calling for the program to continue, and sharing what it has meant to them.

“We can go about all things, going to school, crossing the street, buying groceries, but we know what the truth is and how much a piece of paper affects the trajectory of our lives,” Juan Alvarez, of Madison, said. “In terms of success financially, socially or whatever the case may be.”

Nearly 800,000 young, undocumented immigrants have benefited from DACA in the United States.
