Madison man dies after crashing motorcycle into semi

A Madison man was killed Sunday morning when he crashed his motorcycle into the side of a semitractor in Walworth County, according to a release from the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to County Road K and Townhall Road in the town of Sharon at 9:40 a.m. on a report of a motorcycle vs. semi crash. They said they found Erik Belanger, 33, lying in the road when they arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said Belanger was speeding west on Townhall Road and failed to stop at a stop sign. The semi was traveling south on County Road K and didn’t have a stop sign.

The driver of the semi, Allen Swartout, 61, of Beloit, was not injured.

Sharon Fire and Rescue, the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Walworth County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Walworth County Department of Public Works, the town of Sharon Public Works and the Village of Walworth Police Department assisted at the scene.
