Madison leaders are right to join effort to allow immigration reform to move forward

Independents week celebrates locally owned, operated businesses

Tuesday was to be the day so many Latinos in Dane County had been waiting for, the beginning of real immigration reform. Instead, Republican leaders in Congress and in 26 states, including Wisconsin senator Ron Johnson and Governor Scott Walker, have signed on to a lawsuit blocking President Obama’s executive order creating the deferred action initiative. We are among those who believe the President did not go far enough in reforming immigration. But it’s an even worse slap in the face to Latino immigrants to have this modest reform halted by politics.

So we’re pleased to see Centro Hispano Executive Director Karen Menendez Coller, Mayor Paul Soglin, and other community leaders hold a news conference Tuesday morning to support nation-wide calls to move Obama’s Executive Action forward. The delays are hurting our nation, the Madison region, and are unfair and unjust.
