Madison chapter promotes church for atheists

A nationwide movement that gives atheists a chance to experience the fellowship of church without all the religious trappings is coming to Madison.

A Wisconsin State Journal report ( ) says Sunday Assembly Madison will hold its first service Sept. 28.

One of the local organizers is 30-year-old Naomi Kroth of Madison. She doesn’t believe in God but says she misses the singing, volunteerism and feeling of community that a church provides.

The first Sunday Assembly was held in London about 18 months ago. Since then the idea has spread around the globe, with varying degrees of success.

A similar group in New York City was divided over how strongly to embrace or downplay atheism. The Madison group says its goal isn’t to promote antagonism to religion, but to celebrate life.
