Local ‘Take Your Kid to Work Day’ expands focus beyond career to volunteering, work-life balance

Nearly 80 kids will spend the day at work with their parents at Baker Tilly’s Madison office for National Take Your Children to Work Day.

But this year, the event is going beyond career, to show the value of education, the importance of volunteering, and how to balance work and family life.

On Thursday, kids spending the day with their parents at Baker Tilly, an accounting firm, will also help design a new logo for the company.

This year, the American Red Cross is partnering with the company to guide kids through assembling hygiene bags for homeless veterans in the area. The activity was added to go along with this year’s theme of #ServiceForce.

Thirty-seven million kids and their parents are expected to participate in more than 200 countries around the world.

Take Your Children to Work Day was originally called Take Our Daughters to Work Day when it started in 1993. The program expanded to include boys in 2003.

Since then, it happens every year on the fourth Thursday in April.
