‘Life goes on’: Production ends at Oscar Mayer plant

MADISON, Wis. — After nearly 100 years on Madison’s north side, the Oscar Mayer plant has officially ended production.

The plant said goodbye to cold cuts production and the spice department this week, after originally being scheduled to close in March . Some employees will remain with the plant for the next month for cleanup.

Linda Krugman, a 44-year veteran with the company, said her last day was hard, but her daughters came to support her and brought her flowers as she walked out for the last time.

“I’m so proud of the tenure she’s put in and the hard work,” Linda’s daughter Pam said.

Linda and other employees were given a watch for their dedication and the United Food and Commercial Workers’ Union Local 538 threw them a pizza party.

While Krugman was sad to leave, she said life goes on.

Kraft Heinz, which owns Oscar Mayer, announced in 2015 that it was closing its Madison facility and six others in North America while expanding its facility in Davenport, Iowa.
