Layton Thompson, age 90, died Saturday March 5, 2016 at the Bland Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care in Viroqua surrounded by his loving family and caregivers.

Layton was born on February 5, 1926 in Vernon County, Wisconsin to Lars and Syneve (Hulsether) Thompson. He was baptized and confirmed at the North Kickapoo Lutheran Church. He was a graduate of Viroqua High School, Class of 1944. He then went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Camp Fuji in Japan from 1951 to 1953. After coming home, Layton married Patricia M. Favor on September 26,1953. They were married for over 62 years where his love of family flourished.

Layton worked for several employers. He worked independently as a farmer for many years and loved raising tobacco. He then worked for Viroqua Dairy, Gambles, and Thompson Produce Feed & Seed. He was also particularly proud of the work he performed as a bonded courier for 18 years for Purolator. Layton was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Viroqua, a member of the Viroqua Eagles, and a Lifetime member of the Viroqua VFW. He loved to dance and enjoyed most sporting events. Layton also served on the Vernon County Board as a member from 1998 to 2007.

Layton is survived by his wife Patricia, and his children Daniel (Nancy) Thompson of Viroqua, Lori (Tom) Frederick of Rockland, Kevin (Marla) Thompson of Viroqua, and Kim (Paul) Laxton of Bangor. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Aaron (Heidi) Cade, Dan (Jamie) Frederick, Ryan (Kate) Thompson, Lacey Frederick, Jenna (Nando) Melendez, Keely, Lynzi & Jordyn Schurhammer, and Brooke & Bennett Laxton as well as 7 great-grandchildren, Kinzie & Ryleigh Cade, Joseph and Layton Frederick, Jay Layton Thompson, and Santino & Valentina Melendez.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Orland and Carter Thompson, and his sisters-in-law Ramona Thompson and Karen Miedema.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Viroqua. Pastor Kathryn Ingbritsen will officiate. Burial with military rites will follow the service at the Viroqua Cemetery. A Visitation will be held on Tuesday March 8, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home (123 W. Decker, St. Hwy 56 in Viroqua). Friends may also call at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. prior to the service on Wednesday.

Memorials, in lieu of flowers or plants, may be directed to the Bland Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care or the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Viroqua.
