Lawrence P. McCarthy

MADISON-Lawrence P. McCarthy, age 95, passed away on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012. He was born on Jan. 19, 1917, the son of Thomas and Winifred (Slaney) McCarthy. Lawrence graduated from Madison East High School. He married the love of his life, Catherine Chamberlain on Sept. 9, 1943, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Madison. Lawrence served with the 135th Medical Regiment and then transferred to the 8th U.S. Air Force and served in the European Theater during World War II. He was a member of the Wisconsin National Guard, and in 1963 went to Washington D.C. as the outstanding Air National Guard Airman of the year. Lawrence retired from the National Guard as a Senior Master Sergeant. He was employed by the Madison Police Department from February 1946 until January 1956. He then worked for the State Board of Engineers until March 1, 1980. Once Lawrence retired, he moved to Harrisville. He loved hunting, fishing, golfing, and especially spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was active in the VFW, American Legion and Harrisville Lions Club. In 2006, Lawrence moved back to Madison. He was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church. In 2011, Lawrence was blessed with the opportunity to be part of the Honor Flight with his son, Larry.
Lawrence is survived by his wife, Catherine; son, Larry (Valerie) McCarthy of Poynette; daughters, Vicky (Dennis) Zimmerman of Duluth, Cathy (William) Sayles of Madison, and Deborah “Debby” (Mike) Shaw of Indian Ford; grandchildren, Heather (Dan) Williams, Adam (Amy) Schwartz-Lowe, Michelle (Tom) Nielsen, Patrick McCarthy, Ryan Uphoff, Bryn Sayles, Patrick Sayles, Kelly (Justin) Hamil, Katie Shaw (Charlie Connors); and great-grandchildren, Amber, Peter, Emma, Tommy, Josiah, Braxton, Deven, and Jordyn. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dr. James McCarthy; two sisters, Madalyn McCarthy Zeller and Lois Sally Spiegel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, with Father Steven Schmidt presiding. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, and also at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass on Saturday.
